Restoring Old Photographs
How to Restore and Repair Your Old and Damaged Photographs
Restoring old photos is an art in itself. Though coloring an old black and white photograph with BlackMagic is relatively easy most of the time the original photos you will work with will need some level of photo restoration.
Restoring photographs is an art in itself and requires a certain level of skill and patience however with the right tools and training it can be done by anybody and the results can be amazing.
In the pages that follow I hope to give some insight into the techniques used to restore and repair your old photographs. This will be a contrast work in progress as there is a lot to cover. The main tool I will be using for the restoration will be Adobe Photoshop CS2 though it is by no means the only software for the job.
Some of the topics I hope to cover will be :
- An introduction to Photoshop CS2
- Understanding Layers and Masks
- Adjusting tone and Contrast of the photograph we wish to restore
- Adjusting exposure prior to attempt the image repair process
- Restoring the color in an old and faded color photograph
- Removing artifacts such as stains, mold and grime on an old photo
- Cleaning up scratches tears and rips and reconstructing missing parts of a photograph
- Retouching techniques to bring out the best from your restored photograph
Now the above is not a definitive list, the art of photo restoration is not set in stone and I will take the liberty of adding to the above list as needed
There is a lot to cover here, as I said this will be an ongoing project so please be patrient as i buold the pages and have them checked for consistency
Lets have some fun restoring our old photographs !!
